I’m so proud that the kinds of families who read my blog are not the kind of people that chase Geisha or Maiko down the street in Kyoto ( disrespectful visitors doing this was the very reason that some streets in Gion are closed to tourists.) But I also completely understand why many people hope to see Geisha or Maiko dancing or have photo opportunities.
There are not that many family-friendly opportunities for this so I wanted to use this blog post in order to create a list of available options.
TOKYO
“Dances by the Geisha of Asakusa“ is held at Asakusa View Hotel Annex Rokku on Friday nights from 9pm.
Guests staying at The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon can view the show for free as long as they purchase one drink each. Otherwise, tickets are 5,000 yen per person (at least one drink purchase required.) Reservations required.
KYOTO
Gion Kagai Museum in Gion offers the chance to watch a dance performance and also photo opportunities. Tickets can be purchased on the Gion Kagai website.
An alternative idea in Kyoto… in Arashiyama you can have a Oiran makeover. I’ve done it and loved it so so much. I have written all about my geisha oiran style photo shoot here.
