While on a driving holiday recently we stopped for a night at Hatago Inn, Shizuoka Yoshida IC.
It was simple and clean and I love that it had a public bath too! It really was perfect for a one night stay.
So I thought I’d write about it here and show some pictures!

Hatago Inn, Shizuoka Yoshida IC is 3 hours drive from Tokyo Station (you could take a train and it would take less time but, as this is a road side stop off type off place, I don’t recommend visiting by public transport.) By car, it is also 1 hr 45 mins from Fujiyoshida or 30 mins from Shizuoka Station. It is also 30 mins drive from a beautiful large beachside playground called Hirono Seaside Park.
This hotel is right on the highway but there are petrol stations and stand alone restaurants to eat at nearby – and also a really really fab 100 yen shop!
This hotel is frequented by a lot of sightseeing tour groups.
And there is even a great view of Mt Fuji from the Hatago Inn carpark (weather permitting, of course!)

There is a public bath for guests to use. The hotel also provides these yukata/pyjamas for in-hotel use (you can change into this for going to and from the public hotel bath.) Full disclosure – we were disappointed here that some tour groups didn’t adhere to Japanese bathing etiquette and wore swimwear in the bath. This is a big no-no. Please don’t ever do this. If you don’t want to be naked in a public bath, then I recommend just using the bath in your own room.
The breakfast at Hatago Inn, Shizuoka Yoshida IC is simple but yummy and there is plenty to choose from. They also provide kids cutlery, plates and cups. It is a mixture of Japanese and Western food options. I also love that they have Japanese curry rice at breakfast time! My kids also loved that there was yakisoba (fried noodles.)
The breakfast restaurant is the open lobby space next to the reception desk. The walls are lined with comics for guests to read (while in the lobby/lounge area.) Almost all of the reading materials are in Japanese.
Hatago Inn has a coin laundry for guests to use.
*A little note on coin laundries in hotels in Japan. The detergent is almost always built into the machine. If someone in your family has allergies to certain washing powders it is probably best to email in advance to find out what they use and what your options are. Oh.. and another note.. if the washer and dryer is built into one machine – the dryer setting really only works well for 1-2 items (big items like a pair of jeans and a long sleeved top, I mean) so don’t do what I do and just put in heaps of things to dry for longer – hoping that they will dry. It doesn’t work like that. Best to do little tiny drying sessions for the best drying results. It a lesson in patience but it will save you lots of coins in the long run
Restaurants near Hatago Inn
McDonalds, 7-Eleven, Sukiya and Komeda’s Coffee Restaurant are all 2-3 mins walk away.
My kids love eating at any of the Komeda’s Coffee. So reasonably priced and so easy with kids.
This one is called Komeda’s Coffee, Shimada Iguchi store. Open 7am-11:30pm.
The food menu here is mostly fried chicken, pasta, frankfurter sausages, burgers and pasta.
Breakfast is served from 7am-11am. It is a simple breakfast plate with bread and jam (or just butter) a hard boiled egg and a small salad and around 600 yen. See pictures of the Komeda’s Coffee breakfast menu here.
If you miss out on this hotel, Candeo Shizuoka Shimada is also close by – I love the Candeo Hotels. They have an enclosed rooftop public bath.
There are a few large supermarkets within walking distance of Hatago Inn.
Valor Supermarket is open until 8pm. (3 mins walk.)
Behind this supermarket is the most amazing 100 yen shop called Lemon.
There is also a bakery selling fresh bread just across the road.
Not an “authentic” Japanese recommendation BUT it’s a realistic recommendation for a road trip – there are lots of Drive Thru McDonalds in this area (this is very rare in the bigger cities in Japan.
Here is an amazing roadside stop on the way back into Tokyo – and it has a Mt Fuji View!
