Enkoji is part of my Kyoto with Kids recommendations. For other recommendations in Kyoto for families, see my Kyoto with Kids blog post here.
Enkoji Temple
I loved this place!! It’s a bit outside of Kyoto but worth it for just how stunning ( and quiet as it isn’t that well known by tourists as the other main temples closer to the centre of Kyoto.
When we visited- the kids were taking turns napping so my hubby and I took turns going in with the one child who was awake.

And the park with a big playground nearby is called…..
Takaragaike Park
Okay so on one of our visits to Kyoto with kids had been so good and patient that we really wanted to give them a decent wriggle around at a proper, spacious park. For this reason, we chose to visit Enkoji ( above) after a play at this park.
To get to the park from central Kyoto , we took a taxi for about 20 minutes (approx 2,500 yen) to Kodomo no Rakuen in Takaragaike Koen (Takaragaike Park.) It was such a lovely change of pace and we stayed here for quiet a few hours. We had a little picnic and made use of the public restrooms to change nappies etc. Our taxi driver hadn’t heard of the park so we showed him this website.
If you’re going to the playground AFTER visiting Enkoji – take a taxi for 12 mins ( approx 1200 yen) or walk for 44 mins.

A restaurant near the playground !
A HEARTY MEAL WITH ALL YOU CAN EAT BREAD OR RICE!
A fabulous lunch or dinner option for kids (and parents) who want a really hearty meal,I recommend Bakery & Restaurant Saint Marc.
This is a restaurant where you order your meal and also enjoy all you can eat bread (or switch bread for rice if you prefer!)
This restaurant accepts most major credit cards. They have a place to store your stroller while you dine.
There is also a kid’s menu that includes options like a kid’s Japanese curry, macaroni gratin or children’s doria with potato wedges, broccoli and tomatoes, mini hamburgers served with wedges and salad and also a kid’s bento plate that has a piece of chicken, a burger patty, some broccoli, tomato and corn with wedges with some small jellies. Kids meals are all under 1000 yen.
The meals for adults are mostly steaks and hamburger steaks served on sizzling hot plates or pastas or salads and main dishes can come as an all you can eat bread or rice set. You can also pay a few hundred yen extra and make use of the all-you-can-drink soft drink and juice bar.
This restaurant is 8 mins by car or taxi from the playground. (If you prefer public transport you can walk for 3 mins and then take a bus from takaragaike to Shugakuin Eki Mae and walk for 5 mins.).
This restaurant is very spacious and has room for strollers and also has high chairs. There are also lovely green leafy views from the restaurant. You can see some Bakery & Restaurant Saint Marc Kyoto Kitayama store photos here.
