HOKKAIDO’S NEW CHITOSE AIRPORT IS A HAVEN FOR KIDS

HOKKAIDO’S NEW CHITOSE AIRPORT IS A HAVEN FOR KIDS

Last week, we travelled to Hokkaido for a little Summer getaway.
On the way home we arrived a bit early for our evening flight and were delighted to find just how kid-friendly this airport was!

Many of the locals who live nearby actually frequent the airport for the shopping, restaurants and indoor activities.

After checking our luggage and before the security gate we found the food court on the 3rd floor and then walked through to the Royce Chocolate factory/museum section and then on to the Hello Kitty themed museum/playcentre called Hello Kitty’s Happy Flight.
The idea is that kids can’ travel around the world’ – well a fake Hello Kitty world and visitors can walk between different countries, participate in games and dress up in costumes.
They are given little tokens to collect at different check points and then they can enter the coins in a lottery at the end and win stickers, candy or a discounted drink coupon at the cafe.

And if you are a big Hello Kitty fan but are in Tokyo here are all of my Hello Kitty suggestions.

And there is also a whole area devoted to Doraemon (not sure who Doraemon is? I wrote a cheat sheet on Japanese children’s characters here)
There is a climbing play area, a cafe, a projection section, a gift shop, an amazing craft centre and an arcade area.

And if you’ve had enough of the kiddie stuff there is a whole section just dedicated to Hokkaido ramen as well.

Also, in the domestic section of the airport, on the 2nd floor I recommend trying out one of these cuties, made by the company Siretoco Donuts.  They are a Hokkaido–based organization ( if you really love them, you can even visit their factory in Hokkaido too!)
Many of the flavours (and little guys in the middle) change, depending on the season.
This little box, below, costs an additional 50 yen but, as this was a gift for a friend – this was better than the normal bag , this time.
