UNFORTUNATELY OEDO ONSEN MONOGATARI HAS NOW CLOSED IT’S DOORS.
wacky and fun idea in Odaiba is the Oedo Onsen Monogatari (a hot spring theme park, if you will.)
For other Odaiba ideas (in the same area) see my post here – there are so many things to do and so many indoor options – which is why this is where we head to on rainy days or the worst bit of Summer.
I recently went with my little boy. He was able to come with me as he is under 9 years old and less than…. cms.
There are many different free shuttle buses to Oedo Onsen Monogatari from various points in Tokyo including Shinjuku, Shinagawa and Tokyo Station. All of the bus stops and timetables are here. (or you can take a train to Teleport Center Station and walk for 2 minutes.)
It is touristy and cheesy ? YES.
Is the actual onsen bath section beautiful and beautifully kept ? YES. (Soooo sparkling clean and the outdoor baths were gorgeous – looks like you’re bathing in a stream and there is also the option to soak in little wooden barrels. My little boy was determined to try them all out.
My little boy also loved the traditional festival games too. It was so cute.
Warning: No tattoos, kids over 9 years old and taller than 120 cms tall must go to the change rooms and onsen baths of their own sex, no swimsuits in the onsen baths – it’s nudity all the way.
Take with you
Nothing as you will be given a yukata ( a light summer version of a kimono) once you enter. I would recommend bringing a small drawstring bag to put your phone in ( no photos in the change rooms or onsen but in the main ‘festival themed & restaurant section’ photos are allowed.
(All purchased are ‘billed’ to your change room key number to be settled as you exit/check out.)
What you do when you get there
1. Check in
2. Collect Yukatas ( know your height in cms ahead of time to make sizing easily)
3. Change rooms – get completely naked except for Yukata
4. Main hall for festival games & food
5. Onsen bath (separated by gender of course) – wash body in the shower/wash cubicles – soak in the indoor and outdoor tubs
6. Exit onsen and go to the foot bath via the main hall. Foot bath is outdoors but just about the feet so men and women can go together.
7. Stay until 9am the next day if you would like.
(If you still have questions about the system, there are pictures on their website.)
