TEAM LAB’S BORDERLESS OR PLANETS?

TEAM LAB’S BORDERLESS OR PLANETS?

There are currently two TEAM LAB permanent options in Tokyo.

1.  TEAM LAB BORDERLESS
Please be careful looking for the address online as pre-pandemic, Borderless was in Odaiba.  It is now in Roppongi.
This works out really well as there are so many family-friendly things to do in the Roppongi area with kids (see my very long list of suggestions here.)

2. TEAM LAB PLANETS
This is a smaller exhibit ( it is still big – just smaller than the Borderless option) but has the famous water room.  Team Lab Planets is located in Toyosu.
See here for places to eat, play and sightsee with kids before and after visiting Team Lab Planets here.
Please note that Team Lab Planets opened a new section Jan 22, 2025.
The new areas are “Catching and Collecting Forest” and “Athletics Forest.” Both are stunning and both are so interactive and great for kids.
See footage of the new Team Lab Planets sections here.
The recent new section that has been added to Team Lab Planets adds more of an interactive element in the way that Borderless is interactive for bigger kids (colours change when you touch items and more exploring space etc.)

How to book Team Lab in Tokyo?
Best way to make a reservation, is directly via the Team Lab Planets or Team Lab Borderless websites.
Should you have any problems making reservations using your international credit card, I can also recommend booking Team Lab Planets via Klook here.

Team Lab Borderless or Team Lab Planets- which one is better?
I guess it depends who you ask and what you like.
For me, I like Team Lab Planets – especially if I’ve visiting with my kids.  The route is set, each room is different, the water element is so special and interactive for kids.
I recommend Planets for kids in a carrier (I have the best memories of dipping my little baby boy’s feet in the water by bending down often) and then again once they are 4-5 years old.  The ages in between carrier age and 4-5 is tricky as they can’t stand in the water without getting completely wet and you’ll spend the whole time trying to make sure they don’t get in trouble for “swimming.”   I have more information on how to manage Team Lab Planets with kids here.

If you want to spend a lot of time and really really love large art installations, I recommend Borderless.  Borderless is like a big arena split into many different rooms.  Each room has a different theme – one room even has a tea house!
