WITHDRAWING AND EXCHANGING MONEY IN JAPAN

WITHDRAWING AND EXCHANGING MONEY IN JAPAN

When travelling to Japan – here is my advice on withdrawing yen once you are in Japan (and addressing questions about exchanging cash.)

Withdrawing money at any 7-Eleven in Japan is always the easiest way to get your hands on yen once you are in Japan.
Please remember that YOUR BANK AT HOME decides on the withdrawal fees – so if you are concerned about additional charges, it is best to speak with them before you go.  It is also speak with them and find out what your withdrawal limit is. In Japan, you cannot withdraw more than 100,000 yen at a time.

You will need some cash on you while travelling in Japan. I explain why here.

Regardless of what you do, it is always a good idea to let your bank know that you will be travelling (especially if you don’t travel often.)   You don’t want to be stuck in a new country with a blocked card (because your bank assumes it’s fraudulent activity.)

Many travellers in Japan like to travel using a Wise or a Revolut card .

I don’t recommend bringing cash in your own currency and exchanging it in Japan. It is now and old fashioned and expensive way to access yen while travelling.
